As the seasons switch we often think of new goals and changes we want to make in our lives. It’s a natural moment to rethink things. Small changes can sometimes be just as satisfying as big ones and the switch between seasons is a great time to sort out all the stuff in your life, not least because the difference in weather might change what you need. This is especially true for your clothes!
Now may be the perfect opportunity to get summer ready in your closet. Plus, it might also be a good idea to go through your warmer outerwear and shoes to check which need to be cleaned – start thinking about learning how to clean suede shoes, leather boots and jackets.
Here are my three top tips for organising your wardrobe when the seasons change;
1. Store things you won’t need
When the weather gets warmer there’s no point having lots of sweaters and thick pants hanging around your closet, getting in the way. Take a moment to sort through all your items and categorise them by season. Make a pile for anything designed for cold weather, fold these items neatly and store in a box away from the rest of your clothes. That’ll give you more space to organise the things you actually plan to wear for the next few months and make things easier to find when you’re getting ready in the morning.
2. Throw things out
While you’re organising your closet and separating clothes by season, you might as well take the opportunity to get rid of things you don’t usually wear, especially items for winter that you’re not going to want when the cold weather comes around again. There’s no point holding on to things until March and then just getting rid of them then. See which items you can recycle or take to the charity shop. If you’re going to donate just make sure things are clean first. If you have any items with special fabrics and need advice on how to clean them, just check online how to clean suede shoes, leather, fur and wool items.
3. Organise your accessories
Organising your closet isn’t just about clothes. If you use it to store accessories like shoes, scarves, bags or even jewellery, now is the time to sort these out too. Try getting small boxes for each item or using a peg-board from which you can hang smaller pieces. Alternatively, organise everything by colour rather than type. E.g. put everything red together, then oranges, then yellow. It might sound counter-intuitive but this actually makes things really easy to find in a rush.
Follow these tips and you’ll have a beautifully organised closet right throughout the summer. Don’t forget to get rid of anything you don’t need, store anything not needed for the current season and get those accessories into boxes or in an order that makes sense for you. Then just sit back and enjoy the sunshine!
