Thanks to our girl Kylie Jenner, lips are fuller and more luscious than ever. I’ve been researching lip injections for almost a year now but so far, I‘ve been too nervous to take the plunge. When the opportunity to interview a Cosmetic Injectables Nurse presented itself, I figured this was the time to ask all the questions I have about lip enhancements and – hopefully! – alleviate any fears I have. My virtual conversation with Amelia Birch, Cosmetic Injector and RN (Registered Nurse) at Australian Skin Clinics Collins Street, Melbourne, is below.
Hello Amelia, thanks for sharing your knowledge here on Why Hello Beauty. What is the process for lip enhancement, and what are you injecting into my lips? Any client thinking of having their lips enhanced is first required to have a consultation to discuss the treatment process, their expectations, side effects, financial commitment and so on, so as to be able to make an informed decision as to if it is the right procedure for them personally. A reputable clinic will usually offer these consultations as complimentary.
On the day of the treatment we go through all of these areas again before we begin, so that the client has full confidence that the treatment is right for them. Numbing cream is generously applied to the lips to ensure the client is comfortable during the treatment and skin is cleaned thoroughly. We then inject dermal fillers into the lips, paying special attention to creating an even finish to the clients desired sizing.
The lips are cleaned again post treatment and we provide the client with all relevant after care information. I then follow up with the client with a phone call the next day to see how they are enjoying their new lips.
What exactly are you injecting into your lips? Lip enhancement uses dermal fillers to return your lips to the kissable condition they were when you were younger, or to enhance naturally thin lips. We have several techniques for these treatments and tailor the treatment to suit your desired outcome.
How many mls are patients looking at per treatment, for the various looks you can create? It varies from client to client, depending on what they are wanting to achieve. A suitable amount of filler to create a client’s desired look can be discussed in a personalised consultation in clinic. Generally speaking, for a client’s first treatment I might advise 1ml of product for natural volume, however if a fuller lip is desired then we would discuss the options for create that perfect pout. Again, it all depends on the client as to what is most suitable for them.
Amelia, how bad is the pain and is there a numbing cream available? We all have a different pain threshold, so it varies amongst clients. However after their first treatment most clients are pleasantly surprised at how painless the treatment is. This is due to the fact they we apply numbing cream to and around the lips at the beginning of your consultation, making you as comfortable as possible.
What is the investment $$$ for fuller, plumper lips? At Australian Skin Clinics, our Kissable Lips package starts at the everyday price of $389 for 1ml of dermal filler, but of course the exact price is individual to each client and depends on the look the client wants to achieve.
Is the treatment reversible at all? Yes, the beauty of temporary lip fillers is that they can be dissolved by your Cosmetic Injectables Nurse if required. Although it is extremely rare for us to need to do so!
How long does the treatment last? Results are different for each client, which will be discussed at your consultation, but generally speaking the first ml lasts between 3-6 months. Individual body factors such as how fast your body metabolises the product are also relevant to how long the filler lasts.
Any side effects we should be mindful of, or aftercare advice? Side effects can include bruising and swelling, which is completely normal and to be expected. Any swelling lasts approximately 48 hours and bruising can last up to 10 days and can easily be covered with makeup. ENSURE you do not consume alcohol, caffeine or exercise the day of treatment. Also, don’t apply makeup to the treated area on the day of treatment, unless it is mineral makeup applied with a clean brush.
Is there anything else you would like to pass on to readers Amelia? The biggest hurdle for many clients is the fear of the unknown, this is why we encourage them to come in a free consultation where we can discuss any queries they may have. With the right information and in the care of your Cosmetic Injectables Nurse, you should enter into your treatment with confidence and excitement for your new lips.
