Skincare Do’s and Don'ts

Whilst most of us dream of having “perfect skin” – the reality is there is simply no such thing. There ARE however some simple do’s and don’t when it comes to caring for our skin’s health and we have compiled a helpful list to ensure you can at least ensure the best possible outcome or version of your skin!

Do - apply your products in the correct order

Sounds simple enough, but the order of your skincare application can make a big difference in the end result. As a general rule, products should be applied in order of their thickness or consistency – think most liquid to the most dense.

Don’t - forget to apply and care for your neck

Just like our face, our neck and décolleté will lose firmness, elasticity and hydration throughout the years so remember to use whatever creams and serums you are using on them also. Any excess product – apply to the backs of your hands (another place that shows age).

Do - start an anti-aging routine as early as possible

It's really never too young to start looking after our skin and using anti-aging products such as Vitamin C and Retinols can be started as early as your 20’s.

Don’t – only use makeup remover at night

Makeup remover can seem like a fast and easy way to clean our skin and although its seems easier to just swipe on some make-up remover before going to bed, it really isn’t sufficiently cleansing our skin.

Do - Cleanse your skin morning and night (even if not wearing makeup)

It really only takes a few extra minutes to take the time to properly cleanse your skin, both morning and night. Even if you’re not wearing makeup, your skin will need to be removed of SPF (hopefully!) and any dirt or pollution it may have been exposed to. Properly cleansed skin is then ready to accept and absorb any products you apply afterwards. Your skin will thank you later.

Don’t - forget to hydrate (even the most oily of skin types still needs hydration).

Especially headed into the colder months, our skin can very easily dry out so its important to listen to the signals our skin is telling us! Skin needs hydration from the inside AND out so remember to keep your body as hydrated as possible.

All skin needs hydration - even oily types. Many people with oily skin confuse hydration with moisture and do not adequately hydrate their skin in fear of creating more oil. In fact, oily skin types will generate more oil as a response to a lack of hydration.

Do - apply SPF all year round (and no tanning!)

There is simply no such thing as a “safe” tan. Any sun exposure accumulated throughout your life will lead to visible signs of aging such as pigmentation, discoloration and premature lines and wrinkles. No matter the weather – Slip, slop slap always. Again, your skin will thank you later!

Don’t – overwhelm your skin

More is not necessarily more and it can be very easy to overwhelm your skin if using too many skincare products. Introduce new products slowly, one at a time so as to allow your skin time to adjust. Think quality over quantity.

Do – take notice of your products expiry date

Just like food, any cosmetics, including skincare have an expiry date which must always be followed. Generally speaking a skincare product with have the amount of time a product is viable on the container or outside packaging.

Don’t – share products

It can seem temping to dip into our girlfriend’s or mum’s cream, however skincare is extremely individual and not one size fits all. Aside from cross contamination, something that works for your sister’s skin, may not be the best skincare product for your skin type. Its best to avoid sharing any products and instead stick to a personalised skin regime for your induvial skin needs.

Do pursue healthy habits

This means, don’t smoke, keep alcohol and stress to a minimum and try to keep sufficient sleep for your body’s needs. All of these factors can play into our skin’s health and the overall look of it!
