    The Benefits of Vegan Beauty

With World Vegan Day coming up on the 1st November 2018, I wanted to take the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of vegan beauty products as this is certainly a hot topic right now within the #beautycommunity. I was lucky enough to speak with the founder Lux Aestiva in Katie Blyth, who is wealth of knowledge in this very subject.

Lux Aestiva creates 100% vegan, natural and highly effective artisan skin and hair care products from original formulations that are bursting with omega fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins, proteins and minerals. Lux Aestiva’s botanical, hand made, small batch products are created using only the finest, ethically sourced raw ingredients which means there will never be any nasties in any Lux Aestiva products.

What does the term vegan beauty actually refer to, is it simply that no animals were harmed in the making of this product? Yes, vegan beauty is definitely about not harming animals, but it’s also about not using any animal derived ingredients. So that’s avoiding animal products all together, including things like honey (which sometimes people forget comes from an animal)! I think today vegan beauty encapsulates a whole lot more than only being about the animals, it’s also about sustainability and being kinder to ourselves and the environment.

Which vegan ingredients are the most effective for skin and haircare? A great one is nature’s own ‘Botox plant’ – the Hibiscus Flower, which combats ageing by limiting the activity of elastase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down the elastin that keeps our skin firm and healthy. It’s also a natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which which is effective for it’s ability to not only unclog pores and treat oily skin, but the malic acid and citric acid found in AHAs, gently exfoliate and brighten the skin. Lux Aestiva’s Wild At Heart Scrub contains the Hibiscus Flower, along with a host of other beneficial vegan ingredients. There’s also Prickly Pear Oil, the hero ingredient in our luxe oil of the same name, which comes from the plant of a cactus and is used for its hydrating and anti-ageing products. Then there’s a host of other great oils, such as Grape Seed Oil in our Wildflower Oil, which is packed full of antioxidants and linoleic acid, which helps reduce clogged pores. Or Hazelnut Oil which naturally helps to reduce oil production and strengthens skins elasticity. Or Marigold Flower, known for its antibacterial and immunostimulant properties, which also helps stimulate the production of collagen. The list is seemingly endless and when combined together, some of these ingredients are incredibly powerful!

Which ingredients should we be especially mindful of to avoid when selecting skincare or haircare? Well for starters, always avoid skincare that has been tested on animals (that’s rule number one)! Then look out for ingredients that contain animal derivatives, such as animal fats like Squalene which is derived from shark liver. Or ‘Tallow’ which is an animal fat used to make soaps. Then there’s emu oil, mink oil and musk oil, all animal fats typically used in beauty. Then there’s bee products such as waxes and honey, and hyaluronic acid which can be derived from rooster combs (the red crown that mounts the head of a rooster). However, not all hyaluronic acid is animal-derived and safer versions can be manufactured via biofermentation. Keratin is another ingredient that is often found in a lot of haircare products, and mostly derived from the hooves, quills, and hair of animals (eek). If you’re in doubt, be sure to do your research and google the ingredients!

Can becoming a vegan, or using solely vegan products, positively impact the community and/or the environment? Yes, I believe so. Whilst a vegan lifestyle is certainly not for everyone, it is important to try and do your bit wherever possible. If the idea of going completely vegan is just not possible, try to just cut back when you can. If it’s just choosing some days of the week to go animal product free or making the switch to vegan beauty, you are at least contributing in some way. The cosmetics and skincare industries have a dramatic impact on our environment, particularly affecting the hormone systems of animals who are agitated by personal care products that rinse down our drains and into our natural waterways. Then of course there’s the impact of the cosmetic and beauty industry’s heavy use of plastics in their packaging, which can of course affect our wildlife in numerous ways. So try to choose natural, vegan and sustainable brands whenever you can.

If people are interested in learning more about vegan beauty, where should they begin? Start by familiarizing yourself with the vegan beauty brands that are available and try to make a switch (even if only slowly)! The term ‘vegan’ sometimes gets a bad rap but there are so many incredible vegan brands out there that often have great websites full of information for anyone looking to learn more. Also try to familiarize yourself with the ingredients that are definitely not vegan, and avoid them wherever possible!

Are you a vegan, or is this something you’ve been considering? I’d love to know, so share your thoughts below!

Enjoy Quiet Self Care Time with New Moon Blends

While Why Hello Beauty is primarily a beauty blog, I see having a beautiful space and atmosphere an extension of beauty. With that said, I like to keep my home filled with beautiful products and packaging, gorgeous scents and aromas, and the odd crystal or two for an eye-catching piece. Recently New Moon Blends came onto my radar, and I wanted to share some of their beautiful products with you.

New Moon Blends is a natural and organic quality chemical-free range of skin, body and spirit products, with items including bath salts, skincare and spirit mixes and spritzes for an all over feeling of contentment. Alana Kaye, the founder and creator of New Moon Blends says “I created New Moon Blends because I was frustrated at my inability to find reasonably-priced beauty products free of chemicals but with medicinal qualities. This spurred me to develop my own range of natural, organic products made with no additives or preservatives. I wanted to go back to the basics – so my products use plants for their healing properties, nourishing and feeding the skin. Being vegan, I also wanted them to be cruelty free – so they are only tested on humans! I use mostly Australian oils, herbs and flowers, and source all my packaging locally. All my products are crafted in small batches by me personally and sold in recyclable or refillable glass containers.”

    Here’s what I’m currently coveting…

This luxurious blend of Himalayan salts, epsom salts and botanicals is made for the intention of cleansing yourself during the full moon cycle. This blend is perfect for meditation uses or for general cleansing the mind, body & soul. The addition of jasmine essential oil and rose essential oil blend is very relaxing and uplifting.

This is an all-natural face mist with coconut water, rose, aloe vera and witch hazel to refresh and hydrate the skin.

Loose incense is the most ancient form there is. This handmade incense blend is all about creating a nice, peaceful and calming environment for your space and home.  This blend is made for the purpose of protecting, purifying and clearing the space of negative energy.

Palo Santo or otherwise known as “holy wood” is native to South America and is traditionally used during ceremony or for healing rituals. The smoke from the wood is said to clear negative energy in your body or environment whilst alleviating stress and calming the nervous system. Palo Santo has a beautiful woodsy yet sweet aroma when burnt. It is believed to have many healing and spirtual properties.  The Palo Santo is harvested from fallen branches which have aged naturally in Ecuador. All Palo Santo comes with a crystal for further enlightenment and protection. Palo Santo is also great for cleansing the crystals.

Harvested over the full moon, these sprays are made to calm your body, mind & spirit. Aquamarine is a stone of eternal youth, strength & courage. Rose quartz helps with protection. Contains jasmine essential oil for a delightful scent and to aid with soothing and improving mood. Each blend is created with intention.

Alana encourages customers to reuse the empty bottles, and offer 20% off your next order when you return your bottle.  Please keep in mind that all products are handmade and there could be slight variations in colour from batch to batch and as all products are natural and without preservatives, she suggests using the products within 6-12 months.

Wishing you a smooth run to the weekend,

    From the Bathroom to Poolside

The bathroom is my favourite room of the house, other than the bedroom thanks to our amazing king bed, and now that renovations have finally finished, I can finally enjoy this special space. I haven’t had a bath in years, so this really is a treat. And speaking of treats, the Louvelle showerwear range is just that.

I’ve been using my Louvelle shower turban for a few years now, whenever I apply a face mask or don’t want to wash my hair in the shower, but I’m so excited to now be able to slip into in the bath leisurely feeling like an absolute vintage goddess. Louvelle’s luxurious turbans are made from a stretchy quick dry fabric with waterproof lining, that works perfectly for applying facemasks as it does to preserve blowdries, and would not look out of place at an exclusive resort or deserted beach. It was also named one of Oprah’s favourite things just last year – which is quite a coup!

For a further touch of glamour each and every day, Louvelle are releasing the Riva Hair Towel Wrap on July 18th, which differs from the shower turban in the fact that it actually dries hair gently but quickly, but is as gorgeous as any of the other products available; including eye masks, robes, headbands and hairscarves. The Towel Wrap is made from a lightweight material with button closure that reduces blow dry time and subsequent heat damage. Available in exclusive designer prints inspired by a tropical vacation at Louvelle and MYER stores for $35, I guarantee you need this in your life! #notsponsored #justgood

    Review | HiSmile

Whiter teeth in just six easy 10 minute sessions at home, sounds too good to be true, right? Well not really, as I’ve just finished my HiSmile teeth whitening treatment with pretty awesome results to share with you. While I concede the majority of my teeth are quite white already, I do have a lot of discoloration around my gums at the top or bottom of my teeth – thanks to the odd crooked tooth…

Over the course of one week, I was able to lighten these areas considerably by simply applying some gel into the silicone mouth tray and popping a blue LED light in for 10 quick minutes. The Hi Smile was different to other treatments I’ve tried in the past thanks to the usage of the LED Light, which HiSmile states works to breaks down the gel formula at a fast rate to deliver optimal results in a short time – other treatments can take up to 1 hr per session.

Surprisingly I felt zero sensitivity at all times, even when I applied extra gel around the darker bits of teeth, i.e gum area which is prone to a lot of sensitivity for me, but still nada. I did find my jaw got a little sore of holding the same position for 60 minutes over the course of the week, but that’s a small side effect for a brighter smile in my book. Sometimes while I had the mouth piece in, I felt a little saliva building up my mouth, but by tipping my head a bit further back I was able to alleviate this. I also found doing this treatment of an evening worked best for me, as I was able to lay down and keep my head flat.

I do wish there had been more treatments in the box, but overall I am still very happy with the results seen. HiSmile is available at for $79.99, with teeth whitening pens available for maintenance, as well as a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash.

What do you use for whiter brighter teeth?

    The Science of Scent

As we are all well aware, a simple scent can evoke a special memory or feeling within you within seconds, from a teenage love to maybe an overseas holiday. For me, the one scent that can take me back to Hawaii 2012 in an split second is Victoria Secret’s Eau So Sexy that I purchased on the day of that Hawaiian getaway, and even though I don’t wear the scent anymore, I keep it in my cupboard for sentimental reasons.

I’ve since got to wonder why a scent can remind you a memory, and how this actually happens? Lysn psychologist Breanna Jayne Sada explains, “there has been numerous amount of research into the science behind scent and it is only now that we are just beginning to understand the influence that scent can have on our lives. However, our sense of smell could still be considered one of the most mysterious of our senses and possibly the most underrated due to the fact that there is still a lot of misunderstanding surrounding it. There is still so much that we don’t know about scent, however past research has shown some breakthroughs in how smells are interpreted in the brain.”

Let’s break it down and get a little technical, Breanna explains ‘by simply breathing in air begins the process by which the air rushes across the membranes of our nasal cavities and then deposits small molecules (which are the things that make up scents). For molecules to be detected, they find a corresponding olfactory receptor neuron to neurally encode the chemical composition of odours (each receptor only detects one type of smell however humans are thought to have 500-1000 different types of olfactory receptors which are all sensitive to different odour molecules). Simply breathing in air will draw scents over the surfaces inside our noses to which then is interpreted by our brains by capturing the signals sent to it and then synthesising them into an experience”.

Says Breanna, ”there is a lot of research now that shows that smell is linked to memory which is triggered by odours which can also have an emotional cue for us. Humans can associate scents with memories and then have an emotional attachment to that smell which then can then trigger certain feelings. Linking back to this, various scents have been shown to have a powerful effect on our moods – from the smell of lemons improving efficiency of those performing tasks, through to orange and vanilla scents reducing anxiety and the list goes on!

And there you have, it actually makes total sense right? And while we’re on the subject, why not take advantage of the wonderful wellbeing properties of Melissa Allen Mood Essentials unisex fragrances, which are designed to influence your mood, by working with experts on the perfect ingredients to make an impact on behaviours and your feelings associated with the scents. With names including I Have Calm, I Have Confidence and I Have Joy – there really is something for everyone.

What is your favourite or most special scent, please share with me in the comments!

My Experience with Jade Face Rolling

After mentioning a few weeks back that I had been introduced to jade rolling with Lux Aestiva, it’s time to share my thoughts on this relaxing daily ritual. If you’re new to face rolling, take a peek at my earlier blog post for the brief and a list of the benefits.

Now while it hasn’t changed my life, rolling my face with a jade roller most certainly has added a little extra ‘me time’ into each day and definitely helps to aid skincare penetration thanks to the rolling motions over the face. I’ve find that I much prefer the roller ice cold from the fridge, as generally advised, to help with moving any excess fluid around the face – and the cooling sensation just feels delicious on the skin.

You definitely need a face oil when face rolling for the slip required to glide effortlessly over the skin, and the Pricky Pear Oil also from Lux Aestiva pairs lovely with the roller, and with my drier skin type, I’ll take any extra hydration I can get. I do find I still need to apply a light layer of night cream after rolling, but if you have a more normal skin type, you may be able to skip this step. I also think it’s of benefit to learn the correct way to face roll, which can be found here, just to ensure the art is executed correctly.

For complete clarity, I have only tried this one roller from Lux Aestiva, which is quite large and does require a bit of maneuvering around the eye area, which means I cannot compare to other rollers available BUT I also know it’s a genuine jade stone – which may not be the case with el cheapos from Amazon and the like…

If you are looking for a new beauty ritual to incorporate into each day, similar to maybe dry body brushing – this is for you!

P.S: Try using this roller over a wet sheet mask applied to the face – heaven!

    Where I Find Inspiration

As much as I love sharing snippets of my life and my beauty stash, I do suffer from lack of inspiration at times. Whether it be a photograph I just cannot nail, or simply trying to decide on an outfit for a special occasion, inspiration comes and goes from time to time, but luckily I know exactly where to go if I lose it – so let me break it down for you.

    • When I have a product to shoot for my blog or my social media platforms that I just cannot make work – for me it’s often shampoo and conditioner bottles, the curves edges can be tricky – I simply go to the brands Instagram’s page and see what photos the brand has been tagged in. From there, I can see how others have photographed the product and begin to brainstorm how I can take these ideas and make it mine. Oh, and sometimes bluetack can be your BFF when creating flatlays!
    • Additionally, magazines are great to flip through and look at new ways to photograph or display something, and it’s great excuse for a little #selfcare moment too.
    • When it’s time to revamp my blog’s aesthetic with a new logo or template, I’ll scroll through Etsy and Creative Market to see what’s popular right now and either create something in Canva myself or hire someone through these platforms to create something custom. The majority of graphic designers on Etsy or Creative Market are very affordable, and offer great packages if you require multiple digital assets.
    • When I have no idea what to write about here on the blog, that’s the time I walk inside my beauty room and trawl through my stash. Is there a product that’s just launched, or a favourite I’ve never had the chance to write about, or even a product I do not like whatsoever? I then take these ideas and begin to draft up blog posts, and from there you’ll realise there are many angles to take and you’ll probably even brainstorm more ideas once you begin!
    • Also consider what you are currently really enjoying in your life right now, and use this as a basis for upcoming content. For example I’m right into jade rolling after recently discovering the Lux Aestiva Jade Face Roller, and plan to do a follow up review from the original introduction written in this post.

    • For the above, I simply look to the ever-growing beauty community on Instagram. Once you find someone you enjoy following and find value in their reviews, you will be sure to find many more like-minded individuals from their followers list. For newbies to skincare and makeup, the instagram account @topshelfbeaute is a great place to start, with endless accounts to explore here.

    • When I feel flat or completely unmotivated with my current wardrobe, I love scrolling through photos where luxury jewellery brands Mejuri or Missoma are tagged within. Often I’ll find by simply adding a simple piece of jewellery that I hadn’t even considered will tie an entire look together, and I’ll always find inspiration for an evening out or special event by trawling through these photos and daydreaming.

    • Emma Hoareau is one blogger/influencer who consistently gets it right every single time, and she is someone I consider as having the perfect Instagram feed. Complete #lifegoals.
    • Kate La Vie is another gal who I look to for complete life inspiration, from styling my hair to bedroom inspiration. She’s ah-mazing.
    • Podcasts are a great way find inspiration if you’re a little bit stuck on how to move forward with your brand, blog or business, and/or are a one-woman show trying to do it all. I especially enjoy The Lifestyle Edit Podcast, Second Life, The One Girl Band Podcast, Girlboss Radio with Sophia Amoruso and The High Low, so have a listen and see what you think.

That’s just a start, but if you’d like me to expand on this in different areas – please just sing out.

    Much love,

How to manipulate your mood and wellbeing through fragrance

As humans we’re capable of distinguishing between thousands of different smells and these smells are deeply connected to our emotional state. Scent is the first sense that is activated when we’re born and with our memory and sense of smell intertwined, smell can be the thing that is associated to many memories and life events. Smell can also have a huge influence on our behaviour, it can affect our moods, stress levels, self confidence and even our cognitive performance. The scientific terminology for our sense of smell is called olfaction and research has uncovered that humans can have specific psychological reactions to certain scents. Psychologist Breanna Jayne Sada from Lysn explains: “scents can effect everything from people’s moods through to their work performance, even down to the way we view brands and the purchasing decisions we make. Our feelings that are evoked from smells are usually developed from past associations which stems from our experiences with them – that is, in order for a scent to elicit any sort of response, we have to first learn to associate it with an event or situation. This is known as associative learning and is the way our brains tie things together like when an item or event is linked to another because of past experience. For example, the smell of apples might make you feel happy because it reminds you of your grandmother’s apple pie and the great times you had with your grandmother.”

Various scents can trigger different responses, especially when used with other associations. For example, scents such as lavender, coffee or orange can give people a longer attention span if it is presented with information. So if you’re studying or trying to remember certain things, keep these types of scents around you. Or for long term memory, consider cooking with rosemary which makes our long term memory perform at its best. See below how other fragrances can affect your mood and wellbeing:

    • Jasmine helps improves the quality of sleep and can also help with depressive thoughts by uplifting moods.
    • Frankincense reduces feelings of depression and anxiety, promotes calmness and relation.
    • Lemon and Jasmine enhances cognitive performance.
    • Cinnamon and Vanilla smells have been linked to creativity and cinnamon alone can help fight mental fatigue and improve concentration.
    • Chamomile has a calming and relaxing effect so is great for before sleep.
    • Peppermint has been linked to invigoration, more energy and boosting concentration.
    • Lavender is linked to calming and tranquility.

The Perfect Gift for Mothers Day

The one person I often struggle buying gifts for is my mum, I think it’s because she has her own personal style that sometimes I just cannot pick right for. Add in the fact she’s not a girly girl like me, and I’m just stuck. But the one gift I have pencilled for her this year is a stylish Louvelle shower turbans, eye mask and/or headband. I know my mum is a every-second-day hair washer, so a shower turban is perfect to keep her precious blonde locks dry and I’m sure an eye mask would give a little extra bit of luxury every night, no? Although, as In Style said: “LOUVELLE has re-invented the bonnet generally reserved for the privacy of your bathroom, and transformed it into a chic accessory that can be worn anytime, anyplace”. They’re actually that gorgeous, you can wear them anywhere – from the pool to the beach!

The new Louvelle shower turban designs were inspired by some of their favourite resort destinations, including Florida Flamingo, Laguna, Coachella and Bali, so in other words, simply gorgeous. Let’s take a peek!

If you too are pondering a gift for your mum, maybe this is an option? I just hope my mum doesn’t read this before she receives her gift, fingers and toes crossed!

    Happy gift giving,

    Kovrd Disposable Pillowslips

Is there a better feeling than slipping into fresh bedding, completely blissful right? But after doing some research, I discovered that while 73% of us change our bedding weekly, our pillowcases can have up to 17,000 times more bacteria than the average toilet seats. As well as sounding nasty, it can also wreak havoc on our skin and irritate any allergies we may have. Near fear, let me introduce you to KOVRD.

KOVRD pillowslips are the luxurious alternative to constant bedding washing, by developing super soft disposable pillow slips that go on top of your regular pillow case to used for up to 4 nights, with the option of adding yummy essential oils to the slip for a dreamy nights sleep if desired. Oils include delicious eucalyptus and tea tree to target skin concerns like acne and blemishes, chamomile and ylang ylang to soothe plus lemon and peppermint to clarify. By using motion-release technology, the natural essential oils slowly releases on your pillow slip through the night as you move, easing you into a restful sleep and helping to enhance your skin’s condition. Um, added bonus – it smells amazing!

KOVRD came to be as one of the co-founder Greer was having skin problems (think redness, blemishes etc), and her dermatologist recommended that she change her pillow slip every day to help reduce the amount of bacteria that her face was being exposed to – voila KOVRD was born! As we are in the midst of summer, it has been very refreshing to swap pillowcases every few nights, which I’m positive has assisted with reducing blemishes and breakouts, and also feels nicer on the skin. I found that my skin didn’t ‘stick’ to my pillowcase as it often can with some pillowcases, as these one felt like my skin was able to breathe properly due to fabric – if that makes sense? I also enjoyed the scent of the pillowslips as I was drifting off to sleep and waking up nice and fresh.

As KOVRD are redefining beauty sleep, I can completely vouch how practical these slips are, even my husband commented that he ‘quite likes the scented pillowslips!’ – bonus!

Check out KOVRD via their website or socials at Facebook or Instagram, and sleep easy babe!

The Blind Date You Will Love

With Valentine’s Day 2018 fast approaching, the team at Amity Created perfectly timed their new ‘Blind Date with a Book’ package. The perfect idea for book lovers and perhaps those unsatisfied with regular dates, Amity Created have packaged up a special gift set that pairs a secret book, your ‘book blind date’, complete with a personally selected hand blended organic loose-leaf tea to set the mood for a cosy night in.

Amity Created is for the wanderers. For the dreamers who believe that magic is a warm cup of tea. From the moment you receive one of our perfectly presented treasure boxes, you’ll fall into the world of Amity – a whimsical place where nothing else matters except you, in this very moment.
Tucked away in a small studio in Derbyshire, England, an artist hand paints the stunning blooms featured across our inspirational cards, gift wrap and the four crown jewels of our Blossom range – our Fine Bone China teacup and saucer sets.
Amity Created’s journey began on Etsy in 2013, where owner and designer Daniella Libri spent her time creating custom gift pieces and hearing stories of hope, love, inspiration, and the universal dream to run away, for just a little while. This beautiful range was born out of these tales, as Daniella encourages you to escape with every sip, every single day.

Your blind date book is specially selected by the team at Amity Created from the various genres of romance, horror, sci-fi, mystery, adventure, crime, fantasy. The tea blend that is included is specially chosen to go with the genre of the book, so for example, an intriguing Himalayan green tea blend has been paired with a mystery genre book, while another is a smouldering ‘ember’ tea made from a blend of English breakfast and cinnamon that’s been paired with a romance book.

“Each book is pre-loved & pre-read because we are all about creative reuse and giving back to the environment. Don’t fret, your ‘date’ is in wonderful condition and have been carefully chosen from only the best recommendations. We wouldn’t set you up with anyone we didn’t think highly of,” said founder Daniella Libri. “It is a thoughtful, whimsical gift for you or for a book lover, the perfect way to take some time out and curl up with a secret book and beautifully scented cup of tea. We also have gorgeous blossom tea sets available for you to create the complete package for a tea connoisseur.”

The ‘Blind Date with a Book’ package includes a handwritten postcard that hints at the book inside, and is beautifully wrapped with twine and sealed with wax, and is now available instore and online. With free shipping in Australia, it’s a special surprise gift for those who enjoy reading and drinking gorgeous tea!

    Handbags for The Modern Women

     #GIRLBOSS (Noun); \ ‘gurl’baus \

A woman in control and taking charge of her own circumstances in both work and life. She is a leader, a visionary; someone who knows her worth and won’t accept anything less. She is inspiring and empowering to those around her. She dictates her own future.

The #GIRLBOSS movement has risen to fame over the years thanks to Sophia Amoruso’s pioneering insight into the entrepreneurial woman; inspiring others to redefine their own success on their own terms. How to Clean Your Makeup Bag

Everyone loves to get glammed up now and then, and most women have a much-loved makeup bag, filled to the brim, to help them do just that. Often our makeup bag stays with us for years, trustily holding all the important lippies and mascaras that make us feel great. The only problem with these useful little bags is that they have the potential to get a bit dirty with the inevitable make-up spillages and old tissues that sometimes lurk in the corners. To prevent any nasty bacteria growing in your cosmetic container try cleaning it out at least every few months. In case you’re not sure how, here’s our step-by-step guide with everything you need to know.

Step 1: Clear out the contents

Start your makeup bag cleaning session by completely emptying out the contents. If there are lots of things inside or anything that might spill place the items on an old, but clean towel. Separate everything out then start going through each item methodically. Now is the time to decide whether you really need everything in your bag and what requires a quick clean. Evaluate makeup by how long you’ve had it, how often you use it and the cleanliness of the contents. A blusher that’s been sitting at the bottom of your bag for three years is probably worth chucking. Anything useful, but dirty can usually be cleaned. For example, you can remove dirt from makeup brushes by soaking in warm water and a little mild shampoo. Wipe off any leaks or spillages and everything should start looking as good as new.

Step 2: Make sure the inside is sparkling clean

Next, it’s time to tackle the bag itself. The technique here will depend on what material is inside. A suede-lined bag for example will need a slightly different approach to something made of silk. Have a look at useful resources online for your particular material, for example guides on how to clean suede. If you’re not sure what the material is, play it safe and simply wipe with a warm damp cloth to remove dirt and stains. Always do a patch test on a small area of material to check it won’t damage the item first.

Step 3: Clean the outside of the bag

Finally, make sure to thoroughly clean the outside of the bag. As above the way you do this will depend on the material involved, but most things should come off with a bit of water and, if necessary, some household detergent.

Those are my top tips on cleaning your makeup bag. Even if you need to work out how to clean suede or check the expiry dates of your favourite foundation it’ll be worth the trouble in the end. Makeup bags have the potential to harbour nasty bugs and no one wants that in their favourite concealer. Clean out your makeup bag regularly and you’ll be ready to apply fresh, clean makeup whenever you like.

Eat to Glow From the Inside Out

As you know, I have been working my way through so many books on health and nutrition over the past few months, and one of my favourites has been The Forensic Nutritionist by Fiona Tuck. Fiona – as well as being absolutely stunning – is a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner, skincare expert, yoga teacher and an accredited member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, therefore has more than enough knowledge and experience to pen a book on nutrition.

I recently had the lovely opportunity to ask Fiona some burning questions I had about health & wellness which I’ve popped below, and please do take a peek at ‘The Forensic Nutritionist’, which is available online now but will also be released in health stores September 1st, if you too want to get the real deal on healthy eating – and see some yummy and very aesthetically-pleasing recipes to boot!

Fiona, your book is such a great read and I’ve learnt so much about nutrition that I never even knew! I must admit, a lot of my desire to eat ‘right’ is to enhance my skin’s glow and gut balance but food really is a medicine isn’t it, as the old saying goes ‘let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food’. I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the book. Everything we put into our mouth has an ability to harm or heal, this really changes the way we think about food. Knowing how to read food labels when in the supermarket is a great way to begin to eat smarter, is there anything in particular to look out for Fiona?

Where possible, try to stick to the outer perimeter of the supermarket when shopping as this is where all the fresh foods tend to be. The fresher the food, the less ingredients on the label. The more natural, e.g. fresh fruit and vegetables, there are no labels at all. If there is a long list of chemical sounding ingredients or numbers, my advice is put it back on the shelf.

Should we all be taking vitamin supplements or pre/probiotics, or are they only for specific concerns?

It really is different for each individual. Try and get your nutrients from a diet rich in fresh foods particularly fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplements may be required when there is illness, if a person is on medication or there is need for nutritional support. To get the very best from a supplement, it is advisable to seek professional assistance to be sure you are taking the right supplement and at the correct dose for your particular requirements.

I keep reading that salt is the enemy for the heart, but a nutritionist once told me many women are salt deficient and should be consuming more! Where do you sit on this subject?

Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all it depends on diet, lifestyle, size and health. Most people get enough salt through their diet and it is rare to be deficient, however what we tend to need more of is iodine which is found in iodised salt. Whilst regular table salt is not beneficial for blood pressure, kidney and cardiovascular disease, it is important to include mineral rich foods in the diet such as seaweed and kelp to obtain adequate minerals particularly iodine.

If the goal is weight loss and increased energy, what steps should begin to take for a serious lifestyle change?

Cut right back on refined, processed foods which tend to be high in fat, salt and sugar and low in nutrients. Eating high calorie low nutrient foods leads us to crave more food as our body is in need of nourishment. This can lead to overeating and weight gain.

Include a variety of different vegetables with each meal and aim for 7 – 10 servings a day, which includes a couple of pieces of fruit. Exercise every day even if it is only for 20 – 30 minutes. This with increase the feel good chemicals boosting mood and self esteem which will make it easier for you to stay on track with a healthy eating regime. It’s the small daily changes that make the biggest long term effects on weight and energy.

And because it’s all about the skin for me, what kinds of food should I be consuming for that all-illusive glow? Should I really be drinking a glass of warm water and lemon each morning?

Warm water and lemon can aid digestion but just be mindful that lemon juice is acidic and can attack the enamel on your teeth. When it comes to clear skin it is all about fibre, antioxidants and good fats. We need the fibre to flush out toxins and old hormones, the antioxidants (fruit and veg) to protect against premature ageing and pigmentation and the good fats such as oily fish, nuts and seeds to keep the skin supple, soft and hydrated. Water is important for firmness and hydration and of course helps the fibre along nicely too!

What I’m Reading & Listening To in 2017

The banner of beauty is a infinite one. While sometimes it’s easy to focus on makeup and skincare, it only takes a few naughty days of eating to see the results displaying on the skin and face. My goal in 2017 has been to slowly incorporate healthier beauty options, focus on a more nutritious diet and increase my fitness by more walking – and possibly returning to RPM classes! Instead of just thinking about it, I have been immersing myself in all the books I can, and listening to newly founded podcasts – which is my most recent obsession.

While some of these podcasts are mainly beauty related, it’s a whole new feeling listening to beauty as opposed to reading or seeing it, and it’s so cool to hear other people talk about the same things we do – in a completely new format. I thought I’d share the books I am currently working my way through, as well as some podcasts I’ve been enjoying within the beauty realm – and if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
