Let’s Talk Sun Protection

We all know why we need to wear SPF daily, and of course re-apply (hint: wearing sunscreen prevents premature aging from the skin and lowers your skin cancer risk) but preaching this message often in turns creates a lot of questions, especially in regards to skincare and application. To avoid any confusion, I asked the extremely knowledgeable team at much-loved clean beauty brand Grown Alchemist to answer all your burning (bad pun, sorry!) SPF related questions.

When in our skincare routine should we apply SPF, and do we apply to damp or dry skin?

“We advise that our invisible and lightweight Grown Alchemist Natural Hydrating Sunscreen SPF30 should be applied on moisturised skin, which means it should be applied after your preferred moisturiser, and is the last step of your skincare routine.”

As well as our face, where else should we be applying our sun protection?

“Our body is our largest organ and therefore should be taken care of. We should be applying sunscreen to our face and body before we expose ourselves in the sun.

The rays that are most damaging to our skin are called ultraviolet (UV) rays presented in sunlight. There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays play a role in skin cancer formation. Besides, the UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin aging changes including wrinkle formation (photoaging). UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburn. The UVB rays also play the greatest role in causing skin cancers, including the deadly black mole form of skin cancer (malignant melanoma). However, there are approximately 500 times more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB rays. Therefore, in addition to protecting your skin from the effects of UVB rays, it is also just as important to protect from the damaging effects of the more numerous UVA rays. Sunscreen can help protect our skin from UVA/B rays, only when you choose the right one.”

How often should we be applying SPF, during a normal day and/or a day at the beach?

“We should avoid constant exposure to the sun for a prolonged period of time. Normal day or a day at the beach, it is recommended to wear sunscreen to protect your skin.“

Is it possible to avoid our makeup piling when applied over SPF?

“We recommend using a good primer to lock in your makeup so it doesn’t move around, Grown Alchemist Anti-Pollution Primer is the perfect to use after our Natural Hydrating Sunscreen SPF30. It creates a velvety texture that’s invisible on the skin and helps reduce the slight sheen from the sunscreen and holds the makeup longer.”

Stay safe this silly season all, and remember to look after your beautiful skin!
